People living with diabetes are being reminded to stay safe and manage their condition well whilst still enjoying the festive period.
As preparations and excitement for Christmas grow, it can be a difficult time for people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, especially if it is their first festive season with the condition.
For many Christmas is a time of celebrating with family and friends, and everything else that brings you joy.
It can also be a time of temptation, unpredictable or delayed meals, extra nibbles, excitement and stress, all of which can make managing diabetes more of a problem.
Here are a few tips on how people with diabetes can enjoy Christmas without harming their health.
Take your meds!
Not taking your medication as prescribed increases your risk of complications and can negatively impact on your diabetes management.
This is also the same for any medication you are prescribed for other conditions, such as antibiotics – it is really important to be consistent and finish the course in full.
Be aware of the food you eat
You can still enjoy the same traditional Christmas food as everyone else, and by cooking or baking the food yourself you can have better control over what goes into it.

Eating more=moving more
Treat yourself, have a bit of what you fancy; remember Christmas is only one day of the year.
Try to balance things by making an effort to increase your physical activity when you have treated yourself. Remember, people with diabetes can join in social occasions, even if this means adopting a different approach for carb counting or diet that day.
Drink responsibly, plan well
If you treat your diabetes with insulin or certain T2D medications, be aware that drinking alcohol can make hypos more likely.
It is also a good idea to prepare for the following day, by making sure your medications are easily accessible and you have plenty of water on hand to help your body process the alcohol.
If you are drinking, limit drinks with high sugar content such as liquors, cocktails made with fruit juice and sweet wines.
